Jungang Market’s Retro Bar Revival
Jungang Market, one of Seoul’s three major traditional markets, is home to a growing retro bar in Jungang Market scene centered around SSEUHEUP.
Although it holds a long history, recent modernization has given it a clean, well-organized appearance.
With retro culture trending among young people, traditional markets have seen an influx of creative new shops—and SSEUHEUP is one of them.
Its name plays with Korean letters:
-
ㅆ for ssal (rice, as in makgeolli)
-
ㅎ for hop (beer)
-
ㅍ for podob (grape, wine)
This reflects their menu: they serve makgeolli, beer, and wine.
SSEUHEUP is a great example of a retro bar in Jungang Market that blends tradition with fun and creativity.
The Unexpected Makgeolli
Their makgeolli, named “Haedangupsseum” (literally “not applicable”), is so clean and smooth it almost feels like drinking water.
At first, I assumed I hadn’t shaken it enough—but no, this was the intended taste.
It’s unlike any makgeolli I’ve had before, and while unfamiliar, it’s genuinely fun to drink.
Zucchini Stew in a Hot Stone Pot
Served in a classic ttukbaegi, this stew features zucchini along with tofu and beef.
The broth, reddish and spicy-looking, surprises with a unique flavor—rich, peppery, and warming.
The zucchini breaks down into soft, savory bites, and the beef adds a satisfying chew.
Late-Night Comforts at a Retro Bar in Jungang Market
From Monday to Thursday at 11 PM, the bar transforms into Tan-Soo Pocha—a carb-focused after-hours event.
Expect bowls of rice, noodles, and even toasted bread—perfect for settling your stomach after drinks.
Mom’s Kimchi Gimbap
Made with kimchi prepared by the owner’s mother, this gimbap feels both personal and powerful.
It’s savory, chewy from the brisket, and slightly spicy from the kimchi.
The touch of mayonnaise balances everything out, creating a flavor bomb of sesame, spice, and creamy finish.
Margarine Toast
A nostalgic Korean street snack brought indoors.
Back when butter was scarce, margarine took its place—and the flavor stuck around.
Thick-cut toast, melted margarine, strawberry jam, fried egg, and crunchy vegetables make for a rich, throwback-style bite.
